Many things which work and are beneficial can appear to be over-the-edge. I wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water until you complete your research and just for the record, if you birth is in a hospital and you decide you want to keep the placenta for any reason - remember, you are the one paying the bill - you have a right to have things done your way and keep whatever you want to keep.
