If a doctor just tests TSH, s/he will miss hypothyroidism in many, many cases. Especially if s/he is using the old, outdated range of 0.5 to 5.0. The revised range (2003) is now 0.3 to 3. However, as you'll learn on stopthethyroidmadness, the TSH is NOT a thyroid indicator. It measures the pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone secretions. I'll bet dollars to donuts that YOU ARE hypothyroid. Getting on Lugols is a good start. WE ARE ALL Iodine deficient. Even those whose thyroids are still functioning. Check out the Iodine supplementation support board on curezone to help you through the detoxing as you continue the lugols. The Iodine will push out mercury, fluoride and bromide. Salt loading (check out brestcancerchoices.org for more info on bromide detox symptoms, salt loading for flushing out the bromide and iodine supplementation.

Change your toothpaste to a non-fluoride one, fluoride is BAD for the thyroid. Limit your consumption of black teas and green teas. They contain fluoride.

Add L-tyrosine to your supplements (500-1000mg). It helps the iodine to convert to the thyroid hormone.

Look into getting a filtering system for your drinking water.

Pick up some riboflavin and some Niacin (as inositol hexanicotinate) and take 200 mg riboflavin and 1,000 mg niacin daily. It'll help the iodine get to the receptors. Optimox makes a product called ATP co-factors that combine the riboflavin and niacin in one capsule.

Don't forget the vitamin C, it's good for your adrenals and helps with the bromide detox and iodine absorption. Just take it a couple of hours away from the lugols.

Janie has a wealth of info on her site. I stumbled across it last year. She helped me realize my ferritin was too low, my vitamin D levels were EXTREMELY low, ditto my B12 and that I had adrenal fatigue (high cortisol). Thanks to her, I found a doctor who tested me with ALL THE RIGHT labs and got me off of synthroid and onto armour.

I know you feel overwhelmed, but Janie has laid out a roadmap to follow. She has a support group on yahoo:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormones/ Post your labs with the ranges here and Janie and the moderators will help you interpret them.

and Stephanie Buist, a thyroid cancer survivor and patient of Dr. David Brownstein (Iodine: Why you need it, Why you can't live without it and Salt your way to health) has an iodine support group on yahoo:
