the strings could be worms.

ALWAYS
put samples in a 5 gallon bucket. Take that bucket outside and put a garden hose to it and wash the contents until the water is clear....most eggs fall to the bottom like sand. Most worms suspend in the water, while the stones and waste floats and goes over the top.

Using a strainer makes a mess and once out of water, the worms/eggs look like nothing but globs.
