If the skin becomes too alkaline it will dry out, start cracking, and can get infected. People working around alkaline substances such as concrete, or water, especially with soap can develop these problems.

I have a friend who recently reported that he was getting very dry hands from scuba diving. Rinsing gear afterward increases the problem. I told him to make a weak solution of citric acid and apply it after getting out of the water, then apply an oil. Avocado oil is the best. Anyway, he said his hands are looking a lot better. If you don't have any citric acid you can use lemon juice. Apply these frequently.
