Thanks Surfer.

I'll look into those. The doc suggested my intestinal muscles contract slower than usual, which makes me prone to constipation. Most people have waste matter flowing nicely along with air, but the hard stuff gets bunched up at the corners of the intestines, and pockets of air just sit there getting stale and picking up bad smells.

I'm going to try once again to cook for myself (brown rice, veggies, and beans), but I'm going to add in Beano (a supplement that provides enzymes to break down the undigestable sugars that the bacteria have a feast on, and produce great quantities of gas while they're at it).

The fiber will speed the stuff up, help it move smoothly, and give the bacteria in the colon less time to break it all down.

I get horrible smells that come out temporarily, and I can usually tell what kind of stool I'll pass later on based on what kind of smell comes out.

I swear, my wife has a very limited sense of smell (she doesn't smell it ever), and the evil smells 'hide' when I go to see the docs (this they suggest it might be all in my head). I can't get a doc to take me seriously, and they all dismiss gas seeping out without my feeling it come out as impossible.

It seems a lot of people are stuck in similar situations though browsing through IBS forums.

At least the smell isn't as intense or long lasting as it was just a few months ago (the yeast probiotics have helped a lot).

There's also little I can say to people here. The Japanese would all say they've never smelled anything bad coming from me (complete lie in some cases I know), and then they'd have a laugh about it later. It's an evil situation to be stuck in, but there's not much one can do but just keep trying various things (and perhaps one of em will work! I've read a few success stories).

Now I'm off to research insoluble fiber (bacteria can't break it down).
