Good write-up Doc. The essence of your message seems to be true. It seems like the attitude of wanting to survive takes precedence over choosing what we would rather have for food sometimes. The mental lesson is being thankful for what you have and enjoy it. Hapiness creates health as well as being thankful for what you have. I remember the last of WW 11. (I was pretty young then!) We had books with ration stamps, and food (including gasoline) was rationed. We did depend a lot on our nice garden. We also lived where we enjoyed wild greens like dandelion and fiddleheads (a fern green, for instance) in the springtime. I really loooked forward to picking these in the spring and still do. There is a lot of nutrition and blood cleansing properties in them. Also picking wild mushrooms and berries. I'm still not very good at figuring out mushrooms yet! The wild offers much food that sustains human beings. It's often more palatable than what's in the store aisles. I think most people have forgotten how to cook because their lives are so busy. That can offer much better nutrition and is saving on the budget. In the cold winters, I've seen more need for protein. So, I've seen my taste change with the seasons as well as my body's requirements for specific kinds of nutrition. This is still an intersting subject! IMO, there are no hard and fast rules for either meat or vegetables, even tho I am sure we need to always have enough protein for body maintenance and repair. I hope we get some more input on this. Thinking back in history, I've never heard where the American Indians had supermarkets when America was discovered. It was mostly growing and hunting their food. They were self sufficient.
