Just to throw my observations in the pot, based on reading bunches of these postings: Many of us who have had problems do seem to be in some sort of hormonal flux already, i.e. many of the younger women appear to have gotten it at 6 weeks postpartum (especially in the UK) and you know how crazy your hormones are at that point. Many of the rest of us appear to be in our late thirties/early forties, which makes sense considering that in the United States they encourage you to use the Mirena after having had at least two kids. I also think our age makes it easy for the doctors to pin our symptoms on perimenopause, much as my doctor did. (HA! Then why did the symptoms disappear after removal???) But that isn't to say that age has nothing to do with it.
Also, alcohol consumption seems to come up repeatedly on the site, and additional stressors like death in the family or divorce. I think it's possible these factors, combined with the progestin, push us into estrogen dominance, but it clearly doesn't happen to everyone with the Mirena.
Anyway, that's my two cents. . .
