I agree we have a dependence on the oceans, and I definitely agree that we should not be trashing them. What I still question is the original claim that agricultural runoff is causing acidity that is causing the dead zones. Still no proof of this claim.

And as far as the oceans becoming more acidic claim I still don't buy that either. First of all there is a lot of ocean out there. Are all the ocean waters increasing in acidity? And again how can they be increasing in acidity when there is still so much buffer? This is simple common sense. Let's go back to the cup of water full of calcium carbonate. If I want to change the pH to the acid side I would start to add acid. As I add the acid slowly what happens? Yep, the acid is neutralized. So I add more acid, which is neutralized. In order to get to the point where the pH can start to drop we must first reach an equilibrium where there is no more buffer. Once this point is reached then any added acid will start making the solution acidic. The same applies to the oceans. In order to become acidic the buffers must first be depleted. Just like what happened to the NY lakes I mentioned earlier.
