Hveragerthi- I think you just hit that one out of the park! Thank you AGAIN! My iron levels never even came across my radar (which is stupid, because I was diagnosed borderline anemic years ago). I have been really tired and shedding hair like crazy in the last month.
Most common reason for hair loss in women is hypothyroidism. And hypothyroidism is more common in women due to estrogen, which suppresses thyroid function. Chronic stress also reduces thyroid function by inhibiting T4 to T3 conversion and by elevating rT3 levels. Thyroid tests almost always miss hypothyroidism though. Basal body temperature readings are more accurate.
I looked at the ingredients for my old multis-I ran out of this particular brand 1 month ago (same time as hair/fatigue set in) but I never put 2 and 2 together. They had 50% rda iron. My new ones have none.
I guess my flow just put me over the edge. Plus, when I get super pmsy, I like my wine, which from what I understand interferes with iron absorbtion. Oh well, back to chamomile....
The wine should not make much of a difference either way. It does contain tannins that will interfere with iron absorption, but it also has alcohol that increases iron absorption. The tannins in coffee and tea will be very inhibitory though. Calcium, zinc, and chromium can also interfere with iron absorption so these supplements should be avoided when taking iron supplements. Vitamin C enhances the absorption.
Nettle leaf makes a great tasting tea with a little lemon grass and stevia then steeped over night. Great source of iron and other nutrients and it supports the thyroid, adrenals, liver, kidneys, intestines, and connective tissues.
I havent seen anything about the tongue swelling and iron.

"More often than not, tongue swelling is due to anemia which can be cured by increasing your intake of cereals which iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid. You should also supplement this by consuming more eggs, cheese, fish, beef and chicken. Vegetarians will find that beets and spinach are rich sources of iron and folic acid, but cook them so that they don't lose their nutrient value. "
This is actually associated with several forms of anemia. Swelling of the tongue can also result from hypothyroidism, but I think this is a pretty rare symptom for hypothyroidism.
The only causes I have found are allergies and thyroid.
Actually there are a lot of other reasons: tumors/cancers, pellagra, amyloidosis, infection, acromegaly, etc. Swelling from allergy would be sudden and not long term.
I have always just chalked it up to autoimmune problems. It has gotten a lot better since I had the IUD pulled out, but every now and then it rears its ugly head. Seems to be a reaction to stress more than anything. Do you have a take on that?
Could be from a mild allergic reaction or thyroid then. Stress weakens the adrenal glands aggravating allergies and suppressing thyroid function. If you read the adrenal support board I have posted information on supporting the adrenal glands.
