while I may find great value in "foreign" herbs... I try, as much as possible to use the local sources first, and then, the closest sources available to me after that.
The closer the source, the more tuned in the "plant" to your environmental conditions and energies...
It also depends on availability... foreign herbs and spices from a like climate are also a favorable choice in my opinion, however one must be extremely careful of the source...
There is a lot of "food laundering" and fraud out there... not to mention the questionable growing, handling, packing and shipping practices.
How is a layperson to know what they are really getting?
Grow your own... keep your sources close to home.
You may have read a post or three by me that stated I believe that things like the native berries in the Americas are just as potent and beneficial as the goji, acai, etc. that everyone seems to go raving about. Do not take me wrong, I believe these "foreign" foods can beneficial (when of high quality), however why pay a premium price for something like that when there is an equivalent or better available in your own back yard for the cost of growing, foraging, or the less expensive purchase?
Edible landscaping is the only way to go these days.
