What you probably saw were persistant spreading contrails, due to the higher relative humidity in the upper levels of the atmosphere that day.

I've been doing some research and I've notice that when the atmospheric conditions are favourable for persistant spreading contrails in a particular region. Chemtrails are reported in high volume.
