Hi Mighty!
"A vita mix is in a league of it's own or would any blender be ok?"
A quick analogy, Vita-Mix = 911 Turbo, regular high quality blender = mustang. The Vita-Mix can almost pulverize any element (except for the atom) making for a consistently well blended smooth and silky drink. I've used other blenders and food processors prior to purchasing a Vita Mix and they do not compare, I'd still taste grits, seeds and pieces of of my ingredients. The Vita Mix even pulverizes the seeds of a strawberry. Nothing is left unblended. They are costly, but they have an outstanding warranty of 7 years. You can also find them used for cheap. I purchased mine from Costco.
"Kale huh? I tried juicing that in a juice fast about a million years ago and i still shudder when i think of it ;). What do you mix with it to make the taste disappear... (to make the smoothie taste like fruit)?"
No you don't want to juice kale... lol You lose a lot of nutrients that way and fiber. Personally, I think juicing is wasteful. I'm sorry but I can't tell you how the green smoothie ends up tasting like fruit, it still baffles me. My favorite recipe consists of organic baby spinach (2 very large handfuls) a banana/or two golden delicious apples, 5-7 strawberries, a chunk of ginger, 2-3 cups water and presto. It's incredibly delicious :) Curbs my appetite and gives me a surge of long lasting energy :)
"This whole "blending kale to make it taste like fruit" sounds like something i could embrace... because i'd love to eat it raw if i could."
If you have a blender at home, try using it to make a green smoothie. Kale is a nutritional power house! Start off with 60% fruit and 40% kale/spinach. Gradually increase the greens and decrease the fruit. The more greens the better ;)
