All front-load washers need to have the door left slightly ajar. Detergent is most often the cause of odors from the machine. HE powder detergents are much better than liquids. All recommend running a cleaning solution through the unit based upon certain parameters. There are special cleaners given for that.
Filters that have not been cleaned out, just as you would clean out the lint tray in the dryer. If they are not - they WILL cause mold, just as any moist blockage will.
Despite this, they clean 100 times better than the agitators, they use much less water, and they extract twice as much water from the top load style, which shortens drying time by over 50%. Less water, less water to water to heat, less fuel for the dryer, and the clothes you hang dry twice as fast. You need less detergent. So all in all, the amount of time spent on maintenance of the front load is more than made up for in the energy spent, money wasted and time sat babysitting the top loads. Because they are much gentler on clothing, your washable clothes last a lot longer and you save time and money by being able to wash "hand wash only" and 'dry clean" (not dry clean only") in the machine.
If you are chemically sensitive, the front load will make a large difference. Less detergent is needed, and more detergent is rinsed out with the front-loaders. When a non-traditional detergent like Seventh Generation is used, the clothes come out softer with more detergent removed, and therefore render the poisonous fabric softeners unnecessary.
There are many many environmental benefits as well.
So I recommend getting on the net because there are tons of forums that discuss the couple of things needed to keep your front-loader in good condition. Unless you got a lemon in design, your front load washers will perform much better than any front loader, as long as you follow the recommendations.
Good luck with your sensitivity issues. And PLEASE stay away from all fabric softeners! Even the "free and clear" softeners have synthetic fragrances, or no one could stand the smell. And they all have formaldehyde compounds and many other hormone disruptors and neuro-toxins that are especially harmful in developing brains. And the chemicals that penetrate the fabric are designed to continue to release 'relaxing' chemicals continuously to keep clothes wrinkle free. It is essentially like putting a wash of eau de formaldehyde on before leaving the house.
