Hi,

Well first off it's great that you've decided to make a change in your life once and for all!

I can understand what you mean about wanting to see real results. And you will lose weight while fasting, that's certain. The amount however is different for everyone. It depends on your starting weight and how much fat you're carrying around. There are people who lose 7 lbs the first week, some lose twice that amount. Just realize that the initial weight loss is water weight. 40 lbs is a lot to lose in just 3 weeks. I did a 3-week waterfast and lost 25 lbs. Now I know every person is different, but that's a 15 lbs gap.

If I were you, I'd be alternating between juice and waterfasts and neglect the broth altogether. I think drinking a lot of broth will make your salt intake too high. Salt makes you hold on to water, which in turn lessens the weight loss. (Note: I need someone to confirm that: I never fasted with broth)

With fasting, you can expect a good lot of weight loss. But if you're hell bent on losing 40 lbs in 21 days you may be in for a disappointment. Why not settle for a goal of 20 lbs first and see how that pans out? Is there a specific reason you want it within so little time? (other than simply being impatient.) You don't need jawdropping results to keep yourself motivated. You need results to show you that what you're doing works.

Set realistic goals, track your progress and adjust your goals so you can meet them. If you've lost 15 lbs in the first two weeks, you'll know that you won't lose 25 in the last one. Will that make you quit? Or will you keep going because every pound you lose is one?

Weight loss is not about picking the quickest method. It's about having the right mindset. If you accept that even though your long term goal is to lose 40, but you might 'only' lose 20 lbs during this fast, you're well on your way to permanent weight loss.

Sorry if I came across as a twit, I just want to help. I know what it's like to be enthusiastic and setting goals that turned out to be completely unrealistic. That's why I hope you won't make the same mistakes I did.
