there are some good books on permaculture available and plenty of info for free on the net. I grow everything mixed in together, flowers and veg, that way I never have the problems of monoculture and insect pests. Chickens are great and do so much, I like to also put water out for native birds as they help keep insects at bay and they're wonderful to watch. Eventually you end up with your own micro ecosystem.
