The problem with supplementing with individual nutrients is that we do not know whether they will hit the targets. We are all biochemically different with different needs. In psycho-nutritional therapy we aim at getting the body to produce feel-good neurotransmitters such as serotonin and so forth, but for the body to do so, it needs a whole orchestra of nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and co-enzymes. The biological process is far more complex that meets the eye. What is often overlook that the body also need biological energy called ATP, to activate the conversion of one set of molecules into another set of molecules, such as the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin. That energy is mainly derived from carbohydrates, and what happens if we have, unbeknown to ourselves, we suffer from insulin resistance, that impedes the production of ATP.

In addition we need to take into account our individual biochemistry, where "one man's meat, can be another man's poison".
