I am a very sensitive person, medicine-wise. This was made infinitely worse when I was almost fatally poisoned. Hence the pain and stress, etc., that ultimately caused this issue.
The reason that I ended up going to a naturalistic MD was because of my inability to tolerate most pharms. Even doing detoxes, with herbs, etc., I usually take 1/64th of the dosage for a long time before slowly increasing it.
My dr. prescribed 25 mg immediately upon waking, because my cortisol levels were tested and confirmed to be off the charts (literally) high at that time. Pregnenalone (among other effects) reduces cortisol in the body, somehow. This was going to be a trial dosage, which would be adjusted as we learned how my body did.
This leveled me. I literally was flat on my back in bed and didn't have the energy to move. I would crawl on my hands and knees to get to the bathroom, and could barely function enough to take the licorice root syrup, which ups one's cortisol level.
25 mgs of the tabs that I had was the size of half an average aspirin. I ended up taking a sliver-size. The size of a thin splinter, the diameter of the tab. I don't know how much that is, but less than 1 mg.
One notices the effect instantaneously. I don't remember how many weeks I took it, but I sort of tapered off, by not taking it every day, because my body didn't need it (didn't have the other high-cortisol symptoms). I don't remember how long before the lips were totally normal. A couple weeks, maybe? Like how long it takes to cure one cycle and then it just stayed that way, unless I had a high-cortisol episode.
As far as licorice root syrup, 1/4 of a teaspoon was prescribed to me to take about noon, when my cortisol levels would get so low, I couldn't move. (As confirmed by tests). Again, that was much too high for me. I ended up dipping the tip of a thin stick in the bottle and taking that--so it was less than the circumference of a pencil erasure cross-section.
Around the time that I was posting, others were posting other cortisol related supplements. None of those helped me.
There are issues with taking pregnenalone regularly and over 5mgs. This is really something that should be done with a natural MD, and after you test and confirm cortisol levels. If you don't have a cortisol problem, you will really regret messing around with your cortisol levels and could cause serious long-term issues.
