I like this guy's speaking style. He's intellectual with a dry sense of humor, even about a very sober topic.

I enjoyed reading the US/Soviet parallel. My almost 18 year old son and I have had many, many talks about things I learn on this forum. He is already so far ahead of where I was at 17 it isn't even funny. I read him a good part of this article because my son has said pretty much the same thing. Nice to know when somebody agrees with you.

I think the only step back I have about Orlov's ideas is that his assumptions are based on the Peak Oil Theory, and I go back and forth on that one. Plus it's hard for me to imagine life being "that bad" in the future. Maybe it will be, and of course, it pays to prepare. Still, I like the scientist/engineer's approach he brings to the table instead of all of the economists' points of view.

George Ure is telling everyone to move out to the country. I totally get why, and I'd move out to the country in a heartbeat if I could. I almost did, in fact, but the little piece of land I had picked out on the edge of the Texas Hill Country turned out to be somebody else's dream, too.

But I see Orlov's point of view, too. Move closer to the grocery store because you're going to have to walk to get your food. Pretend you don't have a job and get to the point where you don't need money. Tear up all your driveways and front yards and plant food. Love a vet. Be cool with your local Mafia lord. Sounds to me like Orlov envisions a SuperFEMA and maybe SuperGovernment.

Yeah, the one thing you don't want to do is nothing.

Thanks, Icky. Good post.
