Milk Thistle has the ability to repair the liver and unlike many herbs it is actually listed as a medicine and prescribed in some parts of the world. Because it is an active detoxify it is NOT recommended that it is taken at the same time as liver-flushing because it can cause problems such as an Herxheimer reaction. A Herxheimer reaction occurs when such a large quantities of toxins are released into the body that the body can't expel them quickly enough. The symptoms last for up to a week and consist of flu-like symptoms including headache, joint and muscle pain, body aches, sore throat, general malaise, sweating, chills, nausea or other symptoms. Some people break out in spots.
