I have had someone tell me I had bad breath once and I sure appreciated it.I make sure I don't have it any more. I've also told people. Just tell him. Wait until he's going out somewhere and say " you better use some Scope before your leave, your breath reaks".He will be asking you to check it after that.
I think Duschan is right, but if you don't want to discuss bad breath I don't see you getting into enemas. Try cleaning his mouth, that's what I did. Floss, brush, (get a natural toothpaste [Jason Powersmile] I use) Also order Julia's mouthwash at sensiblehealth.com It works fantastic.
I also liked your other line "You know, honey, the reason I've had a hard time getting close to you lately is because your breath smells like roadkill, pass the potatoes, please?" LOL (now thats an honest relationship)
