Thank you, Mamazoag and other friends for this very helpful insight. I am British and my boyfriend is Australian and in the culture I live in, the circumcision of boys is not the norm and one must request it and have medical grounds. If Jewish, I believe there is someone within the community who caringly and humanely provides this service - if such a service may be described this way. My own beloved man was circumcised for medical reasons at an early age, and has had a very unsatisfactory sex life as a result which hopefully is changing.
As for "GOD IS DEAD" whose name suggests he is not a believer or christian, but someone aiming to joke with you, can I respond on behalf of moderate Christians everywhere.
It does indeed say that in Genesis, which is part of the old testament referred to as the law that Christ, when asked about it, said "I come not to abolish, but to complete." Similarly, the issue of circumcision versus non-circumcision meaning anything special seems to be covered by the instruction of Christ to his apostles to go out and share the good news with "all people" with the later letter of Paul to various congregations about the "good news" being for all people, without their being a divide between the "circumcised and the uncircumcised" and with the addition of a vital piece of context: Circumcision which began as a Jewish act, came to be viewed by Christians of gentile origins as a way in which an adult non-Jew could formnally be offered the "good news" in the context of its Jewish heritage. The presence of Christ on the earth was inspired by the promise God made to the JEWS his chosen people, to whom Jesus was born. The Messiah was the fulfillment of God's promise to the Jews as His Chosen People. A promise not exclusive to them but to be shared across the earth, but it makes sense that the first Christians, starting from a Jewish heritage, would share not only the "good news" of Christ but the entire history, heritage and cultural context which delivered him to the people of the world, from God. And Jewish heritage, unmitigated by later truths, required the circumcision of males as admission to the community before that "good news" could be shared.
Many thousands of years later, I am not aware of any words of Christ on the subject of circumcision. I am vividly aware of the gospel account of the Jesus who said "suffer the little children to me" and gave the teaching that all children are God's own children and especially beloved by Him. With this image in mind, I attempt to imagine taking a razor blade to the sensuality and sexual future of a child and using it on that little body. I cannot see or hear that Jesus cheering me on.
In a world where it was held as the community's best truth that the condition of the body affected sharing in the promise and presence of a loving God, I can see why a mother would sadly permit it to be done as the lesser of two losses. In a world where we know God loves us regardless? No.
