For a long time, I leaned toward the idea that sucrose was the most harmful Sugar but over the years I have learned much and am still learning.

A lot of negative information has been produced in the last few years about high fructose corn syrup and related products. Perhaps fructose is much worse than sucrose in itself?

Ahhh, but wait a minute or even longer! Sucrose is actually the binding together of two sugars, glucose which is the Sugar that our bodies use and fructose which our bodies can not use. As a matter of fact the liver, basically, is the only organ that has the enzymes to remove fructose from our blood once it is absorbed.

When the liver has to remove significant fructose, it becomes overloaded and even starts to ignore its normal function of converting excess glucose to glycogen. Even worse, fructose can make the liver insensitive to insulin causing further aging and deterioration.

The body knows how to handle glucose by using insulin and by converting it to glycogen, but it does not know how to handle excess fructose. When significant amounts of fructose cause the liver to become insensitive to insulin and to become less effective at converting glucose to glycogen, the pancreas reacts increasing the insulin level. This in turn decreases insulin sensitivity. The blood levels of glucose increases which damages the endothelial lining of the circulatory system causing atheriosclerosis and cardiac problems. The excess glucose also increases the risk and encourages the development of cancer.

Fructose in the blood does one more thing, it increases LDL which carries cholesterol to the endothelial cells which increases arterial and capillary buildup.

Fructose must be the worst sweetner that we can use.

Since corn syrup and corn sweetners are very high in fructose, they should be avoided as much as is possible. This we already knew, didn't we? Also, honey is high fructose, so its use should be very limited. Sucrose is 50 percent fructose so we definitely should not eat that? Maple syrup is high in sucrose but the minerals are helpful. Still, maple syrup should be limited. Blackstrap molasses is lower in both fructose and sucrose and is also higher in minerals. Of all of these, blackstrap molasses is possibly the best but even it should be limited.

The only fructose allowed should come from fresh raw fruits such as apples, pears, etc. While they do have fructose, it is a lower percentage and is balanced with the advantage of nutritional value.

I would like to note that Agave nectar which has become very popular has a lot of fructose in it.

While Noni has a low Sugar content, it does have a high fructose to glucose ratio (7:3) that should be of concern.

According to one source, Goji (Lycium barbarum berries from Ning Xia) contains 45% glucose and 7% fructose.

According to Wikipedia, "The most common types of high-fructose corn syrup are: HFCS 90 (mostly for making HFCS 55), approximately 90% fructose and 10% glucose;"
