Mum was not a chemist, but used remedies she knew from her own childhood. We would cover our eyes with a face cloth when breathing in the vapour, as it did tend to sting the eyes. I remember it bringing on a coughing fit which expelled a lot of phlem, after which breathing was easier. I personally have never used this remedy with my own daughter or myself since, but thought it might be interesting to find out how it worked. Most places where I lived as a child there was very little medical help, so Mum just did what she thought would help, we always had Iodine in the house for treating water, cuts and scrapes and we would take it in water to kill worms.
