Brucester,
good advice from John( jpc258): please adhere to it.
There are a number of cases where people have broken their prolonged fasts on meat, and died as a result; meat is a concentrated protein-food and where the body is unable to handle it after a protracted fast.
This person on your guestbook is right in that you have been been burning fat as your food supply while fasting, as opposed to glucose while in eating-mode, but fruit has always been considered to be the best food to break a fast.....and for these reasons.........
Fruit Sugar is a Sugar known as FRUCTOSE, which is broken down by the body slowly and converted into SUCROSE and GLYCOGEN. Fructose is often recommended for people with diabetes mellitus or hypoglycemia, because it has a very low Glycemic Index relative to cane-sugar for example.
Lower GI foods create a lower insulin demand, better long-term blood glucose control, and a reduction in blood lipids.
Carbohydrates that break down rapidly during digestion, release glucose rapidly into the bloodstream have a high GI; carbohydrates that break down slowly (fruit) releases glucose gradually into the bloodstream, have a low GI. For most people, foods with a low GI have significant health benefits in that a low GI food will release glucose more slowly and steadily into the body: on the other hand, a high GI food causes a more rapid rise in blood glucose levels, and when the Liver has stored sufficient glycogen from this rapid rise in glucose, the remainder will be stored as fat...........not to be recommended.
Fruit for the most part has a LOW GI INDEX because of fructose.
Fruit is also a high-water-content-food which your body is adapted for, as our bodies are also of a high water content.
Anyone ever seen a fat fruitarian?
Fruit is also the easiest food to digest which requires the minimum of digestive energy, and where the fresh juice of fruit, or the whole fruit itself largely by-passes the stomach, leaving the nutrients to be extracted within the intestines.
This statement by your guestbook poster is made in complete ignorance of the facts..................
"Obviously , i come down on the ketosis side of the debate and believe it's a totally normal (and preferred) state of operation of our metabolisms.
If it wasn't , you would have died very early on into your fast.
Your body is running beautifully on fats at the moment , why switch back to carbs ? "
**********************
This is the correct explanation for the normal operation of our metabolisms.............................
Ketosis is most DEFINITELY NOT the normal and preferred state of our metabolisms: Ketosis is the transition period from the burning of glucose (while eating) to that of fats (while fasting) and remaining in that state in the absence of external nutrition via ketone bodies.
The NORMAL state of anyones metabolism is the burning of glucose for energy; the Brain for example requires much glucose for its normal operation.
If the body remained permanently in a state of ketosis you would eventually reach the skeleton condition and die of starvation.
Just to reassure you, the consumption of fruit and their juices will not allow you to gain very much weight in comparison to high GI Index foods which most definitely will.
Regards
Chrisb1.
