Actually veronica, Stabilised oxygen was and is used unactivated but in smaller amounts than Miracle-Mineral-Supplement but it is still sodium chlorite.
MMS is highly alkaline and therefore caustic but once acidified or diluted enough it is no longer so, then you have the effect of oxidation from chlorine dioxide
although chlorite is also oxidative
