not a perfect system (hence OJ first time around) but otherwise there would be no monetary recourse
So, while hip and new age and also trues in a psycoanalytical sense, in American we have a system of law, albeit flawed, it is available more or less to one who knows how to access it

It always amazes me the Mom and applepie portrayl, when we all know the weakest in our society are always exploited.

Young children whiel we talk a good game -they are often a victim of adults. Also the elderly are taken advantage of by all sorts of snake oil salesmen, and even the middle aged who are not informed consumers are taken advantage of.

Yes we can all take ownership of learning, even if it is only to use the system
