I almost look forward to my cold showers this time of year... last year, I became aware of how similar (identical) the feeling of cold or hot water on the skin is... seems to be the same sensation\nerve response... the mind identifies hot or cold.

yes, prolonged exposure to cold, or a quick exposure to dry ice, liquid helium, liquid nitrogen, refrigerants can burn - frostbite is an extreme example of this.
