Just a bunch of old dredged up quotes from the Ron Paul newsletters penned by third persons and included in a hit piece titled "Angry White Man" by James Kirchick which appeared on The New Republic this past January. Old news which no major politician or black figure took seriously. Appropriately, the large majority of the 200 comments posted thoroughly reamed the reporter and The New Republic for the article".
For example:
I run a store in a very big college town, thanks for informing me that each time I put TNR on the shelves to sell, I am peddling trash! I will no longer be carrying this garbage in my store, and I hope your publishers and investors realize what an ASSet you are to them.
I'm black and gay. After reading those newsletters, I see Dr. Paul was passionate about the situations he was was referring to but too often, people confuse harsh truths with hate speech. Isiots won't be able to tell the difference. I however think Dr. Paul can and should be president. I continue to support him. It's clear the establishment media has such a fervant interest in tarnishing the man and the message that they will dig up obscure comments out of the context of larger essays to picn racism and homophobia on a good man. New Republic... you should be ashamed of yourselves.
I've done my own research on you Mr. Kirkchick and what I have found is that you have been extensively criticized for having no credibility as a writer. Which I'm sure that is of no concern to you.
Kirchik makes many leaps in his logic; has no idea what the definition of racism is, and makes comments regarding Ludwig Von Mises and DeLorenzo that border on Defamation. With all this talk about integrity and ethical journalism, it would be nice if somebody actually did their research before spewing such non-sense. But, don't worry ignorant countrymen, just go back to sleep. The Feds will make everything warm and fuzzy.
Do you even have a clue what the south is like? I'm going to write an article about you called "Stupid White Boy" about you- cracker. Ron Paul is a good man who doesn't deserve this slander- go write about the other sell out white men.
TEN terms, douche. Ten. You're basically saying all of Ron Paul's constituents are racists too. Nice try, pinhead. There's so much dubiousness between the lines of this farcical article that it reeks of a desperate attempt to discredit a guy who really has NO skeletons in his closet.
The reason the MSM hasn't pursued the newsletters or alleged racist ties is very simple... under close scrutiny they don't hold water.
My husband, who is Hispanic, used to work for Ron Paul back in the 1990s. Here is what he has to say about this: I am a Mexican-American, I worked for Ron Paul in the 1990's, and I Know that Ron Paul is No Racist!
I challenge Kirchick to produce a single individual who worked with Dr. Paul that heard him make racist or homophobic comments, or believes him to be a racist or homophobe based on his actions. Happy hunting.
Since I'm sure the Zionists at the New Republic haven't a racist bone in their body, no doubt they'd have no problem granting immediate Israeli citizenship to all the Arabs living in the Occupied Territories. What a bunch of hypocrites.
Did you uncover any direct racist comments from Dr. Paul? Surely after 31 years in the public eye there would be at least one.
Paul neither wrote nor edited the Newsletter. He has never been and is not now racist.
"I'm thinking of supporting him now" This is exactly what my gf and I said, btw, we are an interacial, lesbian couple, and now we have been reading all about paul's stance on race, gender, etc., thanks to you and have pretty well decided that his candidacy is who we support, we were leaning toward mitt or rudy, but for true freedom, it is paul. Thanks
TNR is a joke If they honestly allow writers like Kirchick to spew crap smeared crap like that. Ron Paul is the only candidate with a clean and true voting record.. He is the only one that sticks to his principles. Kirchick you are pond scum.
This is just a desperate attempt by a desperate establishment to silence this resurgent freedom movement by smearing Ron Paul with the same old smear of choice, racism. Stewart Rhodes Yale Law graduate, veteran, Mexican-American, and proud former Ron Paul staffer.
There's not a shred of proof that Ron Paul is racist. In fact, he sees people as individuals and not as groups. It is the media whores like James Kirchick who are the actual racists.
Mr. Kirchick's comments are typical anti-liberty anti-American rhetoric that both neo-leftist and neo-rightists seem to have in common. Zero analytical benefit and zero percent information to noise ratio. I'll never read another TNR article again.
I am really ashamed that I wasted 10 minutes of my life reading this absolutely ridiculous article. I smell fear!!
As some have pointed out, the style of writing doesn't fit Ron Paul's other numerous writings. But it does fit the style of Eric Dondero, a former Paul aide who was fired. His vitriolic style is available at www.mainstreamlibertarian.com. I agree that Ron Paul should take responsibility for these ridiculous writings under his name, which he seems to have done. But compare the writing styles, and it's pretty clear who the angry white man is.
This is a cleverly crafted hatchet piece against Ron Paul (and the John Birch Society, and all Austrian economists and libertarians with the exception of the "urbane" Cato Institute.) The author conflates his vigorous hatred of Paul's policies with a few excerpts from his newsletters that could be interpreted as racist or anti-gay, in order to confuse the reader into believing the racist and anti-gay accusations.
Ron Paul, full of hate? No, the author is full of hate, enough hatred to print a smear piece against someone who has never run a campaign based on hatred. Dr. Paul has a positive message of freedom and prosperity, based on individual liberty. How is that hate? It is the opposite of hate.
Racist statements "covering decades"? I counted specific references from 1989 to 1992. Three years. That is what you call "decades." Very interesting. Great reporting, and so unbiased. Anyone who has ever read anything Ron actually wrote and signed knows he doesn't write like that.
If this type of slander represents "The New Republic"......then I want my old republic back!...God Bless RP and the Constitution!
About 3/4 through this article I had to stop reading because of the constant smearing and misinformation. To make claims as serious as these and not have hard proof except some made up quotes or your opinions is simply pathetic. Give up journalism; although you might have potential as a storyteller.
If this is all the establishment shills have to throw, they better look for some more muck to rake. Why don't you look at the mans voting record. If you were slightly educated you'd know the definition of libertarianism. Don't you realize that his values are what this country was founded on. Racism is caused by racists. You are the one that is a racist. You are also a criminal for supporting corruption. Ron Paul is the only candidate that is worthy of my vote.
Oh James. Your 15 minutes of fame are up. Even the Austin NAACP President doesn't believe Ron Paul is a racist. http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/january2008/011308_not_racist.htm
This one-sided article is obviously written by a man with a personal vendetta. It fits the definition of propaganda, because it shines a light on a limited set of unproven allegations, with no opportunity for the accused to defend himself. Further, it is rampant with "guilt by association" references. Because Paul once appeared with, or met, an individual who espouses conspiracy theories, he himself must espouse those theories. Such tactics could be used against any of the candidates. Example: Hillary Clinton's Iowa county coordinator recently accused Barack Obama of being an Al Queda mole (true story). Kirchick may allege: Hillary Clinton believes Obama is an Al Queda mole. Really if you intend to write a serious article about a candidate, please do so not as a propaganda piece but as a balanced view.
James Kirchick's January 8th article in the The New Republic imputes racist sentiments to republican presidential candidate, congressman Ron Paul, based on a circumstantial case that never actually connects Paul directly to any racist writing, statement or act, public or private. Then, acting as judge jury and executioner, the author and his supporters conclude that their case of guilt-by-association is "damning".
Austin NAACP President Nelson Linder, who has known Ron Paul for 20 years, unequivocally dismissed charges that the Congressman was a racist in light of recent smear attempts, and said the reason for him being attacked was that he was a threat to the establishment.
If these newsletters are such a big deal where is Al Sharpton? Barbara Jordan? Jesse Jackson? I'm not able to find anything on this from individuals of color or the vocal and extremely effective activists that work so hard and justly to protect their civil rights. It is funny how the only articles I'm turning up on the newsletters are written by people that lack color. What's the deal with that? Is Ron Paul threatening "white America"?
What a horrible attempt at smearing someone, and a disgusting one at that. There's been no recorded history of Ron Paul being a racist, neither in his writings nor his speeches. So please Mr. Kirchick, explain how this is hardcore, court-worthy, proof of Ron Paul being a racist? Oh that's right, it isn't.
Absolutely cowardice sir, never again should you refer to yourself as a jounalist.
And the list goes on and on and on . . .
Here's another quote, with a byline yet:
"Happy Holidays, Rudi!"
