Both pharmaceutical progesterone and "bio-identical (boy I hate that misleading term) progesterone are the SAME EXACT USP PROGESTERONE. They are both made from plant sterols, and both are synthetic. The primary difference is concentration. The FDA does not allow as high of levels of this synthetic progesterone in the stuff sold without a prescription. See these pharmaceutical progesterones. Note they are also USP progesterone:

And they were patented at one time, but the patent has expired.

As far as Premarin compared to progesterone, this is like comparing apples to oranges. Premarin is estrogen, not progesterone. They are two completely different hormones. And the other ingredients listed like polyethlylene glycol, also found in ice cream and many other products, these are used to make the actual tablet, not the drug.

By the way, for those not familiar with Premarin, the name comes from its source: PREgnant MARes urINe. So as far as this goes I would prefer to go with a plant source of hormones than to go for a drink at the stables.

So there is no real difference between the pharmaceutical and over the counter progesterones other than concentration. And both are dangerous, especially when people are not being told how to use them right. They are not being told that the hormones build up in the tissues, that they can atrophy the glands, that they can develop progesterone dominance problems, and that progesterone activates the cancer virus HPV. So which one is safer? Neither, I will stick to herbs the way Nature intended them to be used!!!
