Today is the 10th day of my water fast. Some info about me - I am a 44 year old male 6 feet tall and before my fast I weighed 223 pounds. My grandfather was an alcoholic who died of alcoholism. My father had 4 brothers who all died of alcoholism. Many times I have stopped drinking alcohol for over a year but I always seem to turn back to the alcohol. I never drink hard alcohol but I would drink a lot of beer, sometimes over an 18 pack of light beer. Anyways, fasting is absolutely the best way I have found to overcome my drinking habit. After a fast I have no desire whatsoever to drink and it makes me sick right now to think of beer. The problem I run into is that every family member on my side (I am married) drinks on every social gathering and eventually I cave in and start drinking again. Another issue I have is chronic sinusitis. About 10 years ago I had sinus surgery and had the polyps scraped out of my nose. Since the surgery I can not taste my food like before.
Also, I am severely allergic to dust mites. On a scale of 1 to 4 I am a 4++. Other than that I am in perfect health. :) As I mentioned in a post a few days ago, tomorrow I am going into an allergist to get tested for food allergies . Today I went into the doctor and got a blood test for my potassium level and other electrolytes along with some other tests to see if my organs are alright. The doctor was a general practice doctor just down the street and before he could draw blood he asked me if I had fasted and for how long. I paused and couldn't lie but when I told him 10 days he nearly fell off his footstool and said,"You have had nothing but distilled water for 10 days" ?! I don't want to go into every detail of what transpired in his office so lets move on.
Let me tell you, its not easy to do this fast with a wife who is an (RN) Registerd Nurse. She is concerned for my health and the only thing I can reference for the safety of myself are the books in front of me now ,Fasting and Eating for Health, The Pleasure Trap, Fast Your Way to Health, and the China Study. In the past I have read and re-read Paul Braggs book Miracle of Fasting. The last time I fasted I tried to get her to read the Bragg book, she read a few pages and responded in ways in which I did not want to hear using all of her medical terminology - bah! I have to admit reading it is somewhat like going to a carnival and having all the carnies yell at you trying to get you to play their games. Its just the way he writes but I didn't mind it myself. It's a great first book to read about fasting imo. Another one I am reading is Fast Food Nation and I am really enjoying this one- very interesting. Since about day 4 of this fast I have cleaned the house up pretty well and fixed a few things I have neglected. My 3 kids are now all making their own lunches at home now because when I ask them what they had for lunch at school the past few days it has been- cheeseburger, chicken nuggets and fries, burrito, etc. They also have a salad with the lunches and a milk. I have scoured though every item in the pantry and am finding that at least half of the food items we have in this house are unhealthy.
Some fasting info- My weight this morning was 201.2. On the 6th day of my fast I had a lot of acid indigestion and I almost ended the fast but I decided to try 4 Tums and that made it worse because my stomach couldn't keep them down and I regurgitated all of those rascals up in short order. The next day the acid was only half as bad, and the next, it was nearly gone. After the 4th day my hunger pains went away. This morning my stomach was cramping and I went to the bathroom and -- slithering black sulfur snakes batman ! smelled a lot like sulfur. (sorry just describing) An hour later I went again , same thing. This evening I did a few bench presses and some curls. I have plenty of energy. Even went to the mall and walked about half a mile there. Let me just end this message with that note on floating sulfur snakes and call it a night. If anyone has any questions or comments I would love to hear from you. If anyone is interested, I will post my lab results from my blood work when I receive them.
