Hi again - 2 things I do, minor, yet seems to be helpful is I show movies at lunch. some are silly movies, some are really childish movies, some are fairly recent. Yet I find more and more kids show up, mainly to get away from the fights, drugs, gang activities, and other maladaptive behaviors that go on behind classrooms. Odd thing is, our school will pay to allow certain groups to go on countless field trips. Pay for multiple teachers to go to the same useless conference, yet they wont pay for supervision on the campus during lunch. I have lost count of the number of kids who go behind rooms to fight, have sex, do all sorts of drugs, from alcohol to pot to heroin. Left unsupervised, kids have a way of being dragged down to things most harmful. I do my best to create a small haven, an oasis of safety. Kids will do homework, sit and chat, eat, watch the movie. One rule, no negative behavior, such as put downs.
It isn't much, but it's a start.
