First, thanks for everyone who has contributed to this post. This is a great forum and a great way to get information that is hard to find any other way.

From reading posts here and other sites, from researching Iodine and it's chemistry, and from my own experimentation I've discovered the following:

Iodine is one of the most potent and versatile infection control agents ever discovered. It is necessary for proper functioning of the thyroid, provides support for the adrenal glands, regulates and/or eliminates anxiety and depression, promotes better mental acuity, assists in the removal of heavy metals, bromide, fluoride, and other chemicals from the body, and probably myriad other functions that are minute and hard to measure or observe. It seems to have a positive affect on breast cancer. It extends lifespan. In other words, we need this stuff.

US RDA of 150 micrograms or so is inadequate. Jaapanese people living in coastal areas who consume a lot of seaweed and seafood receive about 12 milligrams of Iodine per day from their diets, which is approximately 100 times the RDA (this is equivalent to roughly 2 "vertical" drops of 5% Lugol's). They apparently suffer no ill effects from consuming Iodine at this level. The Japanese also have the lowest incidence of breat cancer and higher life spans than most other populations of the world. They are arguably more intelligent, if one considers the achievements of the Japanese in almost every area of intellectual endeavor.

Fears of thyroid problems from iodine appear to be unwarrented as long as the correct amounts of INORGANIC iodine are used. The terms "organic" and "inorganic", by the way, are the chemistry meaning indicating whether or not an iodine preparation contain carbon atoms. Organic iodine contains carbon, inorganic does not. Examples of inorganic iodine are Lugol's, SSKI , and Povidone Iodine. Examples of organic iodine are Amiodarone (a drug) and radiocontrast media such as Propilyodone.

As someone with ear and sinus trouble, I am trying diluted iodine in a Neti pot (5 drops of Lugol's in 6 oz of distilled water) to irrigate my sinuses and am also instilling the same dilution into my ears. For ears Povidone Iodine can also be used at the same dilution (it's easier to obtain). So far, so good. No pain whatsoever. A recent sinus infection that was ramping up was stopped in its tracks. A sore throat that I had subsequent to a cold was also eliminated in one day by gargling with 6 drops of Lugol's in 6 oz of distilled water. Undiluted Lugol's is caustic and may cause blistering of the skin and/or itching which is problematic for ear use but seems to cause no permanent damage.

I will keep everyone posted regarding iodine and ear problems as this seems to be a topic that keeps popping up periodically on this forum.
