About 1/3 of genital herpes cases diagnosed are actually type 1, generally from someone performing oral sex while being contagious with oral herpes. A blood test like the HerpeSelect IgG is a very good test, but it can't determine the location of a herpes infection. It also can't give a reliable negative until about 16 weeks post possible exposure. Don't let any doctor order a IgM test since it won't give you any useful results.
The ideal diagnostic test would have been a type-specific culture done when your symptoms were active since a positive result gives the type as well as the location.
