Good post - Golds logic and sensibility towards this subject is difficult to dismiss.

Gold did admit however that the Russian/Ukrainian scientific theories on abiogenic oil predated his own.

In the book he also ties in an alternative theory for earthquakes which does not completely rule out plate tectonics but does give reasons why animals seem to have extra sensory perception and flee before the quake occurs.
He says that pockets of methane and oil rising to the surface causing strata to shift is the cause and that as the gas is lower in density it is able to escape to the surface more quickly and therefore the animals smelling the gas flee.

Then there is evidence from the sea - Methane hydrate (ice made up of a methane-water combination) covers very large areas of the ocean floor and the total quantities of the element carbon contained in this substance is estimated to be greater than the carbon contained in all the coal and oil that has been identified in the the world over. This concentration of carbon could not have arisen from surface plant material sinking down, as such a supply is far too small and would have bought other material down with it, which is not there. But beyond this how could layers many meters thick composed of this solid ice have formed from a supply from above, when neither plant material nor bare methane gas could penetrate downward through the ice? yet large bubbles of gas are detected, held down between the rock of the ocean floor and the ice layer above.
Out gassing from cracks and fissures explains this.
It has now been widely recognized that certain features of the ocean floor can be interpreted only as the result of violent explosive eruptions of gas. in some cases the violent phenomena have been directly observed, as in the eruption that caused a devastateing tsunami on the coast of Papua New Guinea in july 1998.
Some of these violent eruptions of gas create circular depressions of as much as 200 meters in diameter!
