I really feel for you because you are caught between a rock and a hard place! In order to keep from absorbing other people's energy, your own energy has to be very strong. And when you are working long hours in a stressful environment that will deplete your energy leaving you more susceptible. But you have had a major breakthrough in realizing that THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU!!!
My taiji teacher of 12 yrs told me to stear clear of hospitals, funeral homes, cemetaries, nursing homes, etc. for a long time when I first started studying with him. Even environments were there is a strong emotional charge can be detrimental and I came to recognize that I was too sensitive to tolerate such places. My energy was very weakened and I was quite ill, and he was concerned about me absorbing the energy and getting worse. Oddly, I realized that I had established a pattern of living and working in or very near these environments...lived across the street from a major cemetary in Chicago, lived next door to a hospital, worked in several psychiatric hospitals and medical clinics, lived in a home that I later learned had been relocated and was originally a funeral home, and I've worked in several long-term care facilities (nursing homes)! Jeez, I even realized that I would often stand next to a garbage can or trash basket!!!
With a lot of work...detoxing, destressing, meditating, cleaning up my diet, using natural medicine, getting plenty of sleep and doing a lot of emotional work, and regular practice of qigong...I was able to regain my health, strengthen my energy, and not absorb other people's energy. There are still times when I will take in other people's stuff...usually when I'm stressed out, not sleeping enough, working too much or have my period. But at least I am able to recognize almost immediately that 'this is not mine', and reign myself back in to do what I need to in order to strengthen myself again.
After many years of studying with him, I had an opportunity to work in long-term/rehab care and asked him what he thought. He told me that I had come a long way and that I should be safe and not react as I had in the past...but he cautioned me to keep an eye on myself. Now I work in a corporate environment and do extensive air travel for work. I have noticed that I am more susceptible by being in such close quarters on planes and I now wear a Bioshield and also listen to my favorite tunes on my iPod and read a good book. This seems to help considerably. It's like I fill up my own 'space' so that no one else can get in. However, I am also looking for a new job because the travel, changing time zones, jet lag, long hours and sleep deprivation definitely take their toll on me, and my work circumstances are not compatible with my sensitivity or with supporting and maintaining my well-being. Sometimes you need to remove yourself from a toxic environment!
You have to address this on all levels...physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental! You are higly sensitive (the blessing and the curse) and things will effect you that won't effect other people...or at least, you will be aware of the effect. You must learn to take care of yourself and establish energetic boundaries so that other's cannot penetrate you energetically or vampire your energy. Spend time in nature...sit in the sun, sit under trees (especially pine trees), jump in the ocean, lie in the grass under the stars. These things will help to recharge your batteries. Take up yoga or taiji or qigong, and meditate regularly. You might also want to take up a regular practice of smudging yourself (sage and sweetgrass), taking Sea Salt and baking soda baths (good for clearing the etheric body) and burning incense in your home. Keep fresh flowers and pleasant pictures/photographs on your desk at work and, if possible, play some soft, soothing music that YOU like. Make your work space as much a part of you as possible so that you have reminders of who is you and who isn't. And when dealing with emotional and demanding people, keep your concentration on your belly, keep your mouth shut, listen...but not intensely, and if you need to respond, keep it calm and simple. If you react with emotion this will further drain your energy and open up an entry point for others to take hold or suck you dry. I would also very discretely sprinkle Sea Salt around my desk or office, and in the corners of any rooms that i noticed this occuring in. Sea Salt is very purifying. And keep a glass of water on your desk that you DON'T drink! This, too, will help to absorb any negative vibes around. Just make sure that you don't mix it up with the big glass of water that you should be sipping on all the time. And given as sensitive as you are, you might want to add some flower essences or Rescue Remedy drops to the water for additional protection.
Then there's also regular cleansing, a healthy diet, sleeping well, breathing deeply...everything you can do to build and strengthen your energy.
*Regarding the glass of water on your desk, do the same thing on your nightstand. You are very open and susectible to subtle energies when you are sleeping, and some of these might be more dark than light. They will be attracted to the water and will not harm you. Just make sure to toss the water in the morning and DO NOT DRINK IT!!!
