Posting on this forum has really been an eye-opener for me. It's been mostly fun, with a good give-and-take between people of opposing viewpoints. And it's been very amusing and entertaining to read and react to the posts from people who, if they actually believed half the things they were saying, would be certifiably insane.

But there's been an ugly undercurrent of racism running through a lot of the posts here that bothers me.

Regardless of what anyone else says, it's pretty obvious, to me and most sane, rational people, that Barrack Obama is, as a politican, a fairly centrist Democrat. In spite of what some have said, he's hardly the most liberal politician, even in the Senate (and before you post anything about that so-called analysis that "proves" Obama is the most liberal member of congress, save your time - that's been debunked so many times it's not even funny). He may be slightly to the left of Hillary Clinton (mainly because of her vote on the Iraq war), but he's certainly not as liberal as Ted Kennedy, or the Senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders, who is an ACTUAL Socialist (look it up!).

Obama's positions on the issues are what you would expect from a slightly left-of-center Democrat. His horribly "socialist" tax policy, for instance, would simply restore the tax rates to what they were when Bill Clinton was President (and if you think he was a socialist, then you have to explain why he pissed off so many liberals, like me, with his right-leaning policies when he was president). In case anyone has forgotten, when George Bush The Dumber took office, he cut the tax rates on the wealthiest individuals and corporations in this country - John McCain, that closet socialist, opposed them then, and he opposed them up until 2004, when he decided to position himself for the presidency in 2008.

Obama was a state legislator in Illinois for several years before being elected to the Senate (he replaced an incumbent Republican, so clearly Illinois is no "socialist" paradise). He has co-authored legislation with some of the most conservative members of the Senate. He has stated his opposition to gay marriage, and his support for gun rights. His position on abortion is no different from most Democrats in congress.

So, why all of these attacks on Obama's character? Why the vitriol directed at him and his wife, Michelle? He's been accused of forging his birth certificate; of being a stealth muslim; of being a terrorist sympathizer; of being a white-hating racist. All of these accusations have been refuted time and time again, yet people on right-wing websites and some posters here simply can't let go of their fantastic notions that the United
States is about to elect someone who is going to change our system of government from a market-based capitalistic one to a socialist, or even communistic, one, while installing Sharia law to boot. Why?

As far as I'm concerned, a large number of people in this country simply cannot accept the fact that a man who not 100% white is about to be elected President. All they see is the color of his skin, and simply cannot get beyond that.

To be clear, I don't think that everyone who opposes Obama is a racist. There are clearly many people who oppose him on political grounds, who feel he's too liberal, or too inexperienced, or that John McCain would make a better President. And I won't even get into the people who think Obama is just another NWO-approved figurehead, hand-picked by the international bankers who really run everything.

But the angry vitriol that comes across in some of the posts on this forum really shocks and angers me. There is a deep-seated hatred in some of the posters here that is truly ugly, and really deserving of no respect whatsoever. As a case in point, here's something that the poster John McCain 2008 posted earlier today:

"geez...somebody didn't get the rulebook to you in time for this posting. blacks, no matter how stupid and lazy and worthy of ridicule or fat-in-the-ass michelle is, cannot be made fun of because in a former life they were slaves. that's racism, fella. because most blacks have fat asses, and michelle obama's is fat, you would be a racist for bringing up the fat that she's a fat-ass. get with the program!"

This was in response to a post about how Saturday Night Live wouldn't dare to parody Michelle Obama - when in fact they had, the night before.

I'm calling this out for the racist garbage that it is. And I ask that those of you who read and regurgitate the racist talking points of extreme right-wing websites to take a good look at yourselves, and ask yourselves if this is what you think being an American is all about. We can all agree to disagree (on just about everything under the sun), but without dehumanizing anyone because of his or her race. That's not the America I want to live in. And, hopefully, if Obama does win this election, we as a country will finally begin to purge ourselves of this sickness, for it has gone on for far too long.
