Okay, I'm not getting any help in the water forums so I'm posting this here as people in this forum seem knowledgeable on this subject. Has anyone used any fluoride water filters with any success? I am specifically looking at the Crystal Quest fluoride filters because they are inexpensive and non-intrusive. They also have some nice reverse-osmosis filters which I may look into later (bit more pricey and bulky).
One question I have is that on their website, they state that the fluoride filter uses an aluminum oxide element which takes fluoride levels down to .5 ppm. Where I live the fluoride levels are 1 ppm, so would this only reduced fluoride levels by 50%? I e-mailed them but they haven't responded yet.
Also, anyone that is shopping around for shower filters you might want to look out for some possible scams. I found a website that claims to have a shower filter that removes fluoride and chlorine using a CQ900 filter (the same filters that Crystal Quest uses in its faucet water filters). They were selling it for $138, a little pricey, but I thought if it really reduces fluoride it might be worth it.

Then I went to the Crystal Quest website and searched for shower filters. A picture of the same exact shower filter came up but it wasn't a fluoride shower filter just a standard shower filter and it was priced under $50.

I did some more searching and found a couple of other sites selling the Crystal Quest shower filter (obviously the same product from the pictures) but claiming that it also reduces fluoride with huge mark ups. I also e-mailed Crystal Quest about these apparent fraudulent claims from people selling their product and I will be interested to hear their response.
This leads me to one final question, apparently there are no shower filters that currently remove or reduce fluoride. Is this because it is impractical (the water would not be in the filter long enough to reduce the levels) or because it is unnecessary (i.e. we don't absorb fluoride through our skin)?
I have heard some people say that we do absorb fluoride through our skin while we are showering and others that say we don't. If you answer this question, please include a link or a reference as to where you are getting your information, or at least how you have formed your opinion.
