Ulcerative colitis, and the closely related Crohn's disease, are autoimmune conditions triggered off by the mycoavian complex bacterium (MAC). Autoimmune conditions also involve immune suppression through the adrenal glands, which normally regulate the immune response through the production of corticosteroids. These immune modulating corticosteroids are needed for the production of the normal high affinity (specific) antibodies. The lack of corticosteroids from the adrenal dysfunction leads to the overproduction of low affinity (nonspecific) antibodies, which mistake healthy tissue for foreign antigens. The rest of the immune system does its job just as it is designed to do. The immune system is not overactive as many doctors claim, and is why immune suppression through the use of steroidal medications actually makes the underlying condition worse. This is also why other immune suppressants, such as stress, make autoimmune conditions worse as stress like steroids atrophy the adrenal glands leading to further immune suppression and reduction of immune modulating corticosteroids.

Proper treatment of autoimmunity involves antimicrobials to kill the infection, and building up the adrenal glands. The best common antimicrobials are chaparral, pau d' arco and andrographis, which should be taken 3 times daily at least 20 minutes before meals. Yucca root would also be very beneficial in the case of UC as it is a great anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial. It will also increase the effectiveness of the other herbs. Licorice root is also a good antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

For the adrenal glands vitamin C and pantothenic acid are essential. Use natural sources of vitamin C like amla, acerola, berries, kiwis, watercress, etc. The vitamin C (ascorbic acid) commonly sold in stores is not stable at all, and quickly breaks down. Natural sources are stronger and more stable. Adaptogenic herbs also support the adrenal glands. Good choices for adaptogens include licorice root, ashwagandha, suma, astragalus, Siberian ginseng, and jiaogulan.

Stay away from steroidal medications, adrenal glandulars, and stimulants like caffeine and nicotine since these all weaken the adrenals with regular use. Watch out for hidden caffeine sources like aspirin, kola nut (bissy nut), and guarana (extremely high in caffeine). Also keep your stress levels to a minimum. Find what works for you to control your stress such as pets, exercise, meditation, etc.
