Hi doctor,
My 80+ Lb. Lab/pit mix, around 11 yrs. old was diagnosed with ACL tears in both back knees several months ago. The vet recommended surgery, but considering the very long recouperative time and trying to restrain her appropriately and then doing it again on the second knee, we decided she would be much happier just managing it.
The vet gave her Deramaxx. I gave it to her for 2 mos and it worked great. She quit limping and I discontinued it for a few months. About a week ago she totally relapsed, so I began the Deramaxx again. She takes 1/2 of a 75 mg. tablet daily. This afternoon I watched her walk away after defecating and a lot of blood (not bloody diarrhea) was draining from her rectum. I cleaned her up and she doesn't appear to have any pain there, but a few days ago she did have diarrhea in the house which she doesn't do unless it is an emergency.
Anyway, I have discontinued the Deramaxx. She eats Evo by Ennova. I will contact the vet monday. I don't think he is that intuitive in his treatment. What tests sould I ask for to see what is going on? And what can I do naturally to sooth her intestines in the mean time. After this clears up, if she is okay, is there anything either drug or natural that will be strong enough for this kind of pain. The Deramaxx made an incredible difference in her quality of life. She was acting like a puppy again. But, I want nothing to do with anymore drugs that have these side effects.
Thanks for your interest.
Marj
