Megan before you make a decision I want to share my husbands story with you. I've shared part of it on here before but not in such detail.

My husband was considering one of those surgeries where they close off part of the stomach because we had been on a low fat diet for years and he kept gaining weight. I asked him to wait and let me pray. I then prayed desperatly to God asking him for an alternative. He came home from his back surgeon (broke his back at work) saying that his doctor wanted him on the Atkins diet. I flew off the handle because it was such a high fat diet and didn't it kill people. I was extreemly upset but we bought the book anyway and I primarily read it because I had asked God for an alternative.

After reading it we decided to give it a go and he lost some weight but only stayed on it a couple of months. Went off because of circumstances beyond our control but didn't go back on it because he didn't want to give up the carbs. About a year later he had a stroke. He thought that he would be dead within 5 years and began trying to set up things for his family to go on without him. Again we went back on it and after 9 months on the Atkins diet he went to be examined at one of the heart centers here in Indianapolis. They did some type of scan, I'd ask him the actual name of it but he's not here. Then they told him that on a 0 - 2000 scale (0 being the best you can be and 2000 being the worst) his heart was a 0. There wasn't even any scar tissue left. He takes no supplements (won't even take the Atkins vitamins) and other than the diet changed his life in no other way. His improvement can only be attributed to the diet. The diet does include adequate water per day but he is very bad about doing this part of it. He was told that they had never seen such a healthy heart in a man his age and "unofficially" to keep doing whatever he was doing. His cholesterol was also down over 200 points, weight down over 100 lbs.

I just spent 2 hours going through the watercure website. I found that the information the website gave out was interesting and sound. Or at least it seemed to be. But then I started clicking on the testemonials in thier forum and every one I clicked on said that they had more energy but that it wasn't curing whatever was wrong with them. Maybe I clicked on the wrong ones. While it might actually be a valid cure for everything the forum didn't reflect it. They had documentation saying that there was no such thing as bad cholesterol but no research proof that they are saving heart patients lives. That disturbs me. In fact I personally find it reckless. What if someone dies because they decide to ignore thier problem and just drink water? I know I'm probably going to get blasted for my opinion on this but I'm stating it anyway. I did a search and I did find two testemonials concerning hearts and cholesterol at another website but that isn't much to base a belief on.

If your water intake is low then by all means raise it. It's essential to all the body functions. Adding thier unrefined Sea Salt would probably not be a bad idea either. And it's relativly cheap. But based on thier testemonials I wouldn't count on it being what brings you complete health. I haven't read the book yet, it's now on my list of things to do, I'm basing my opinion on the testemonials. Before you count on it lowering your cholesterol or even discount watching your cholesterol I would at least go to thier website and read the forums to make your own decision.

If they are correct and the "bad" cholesterol is but a symptom of bad spots in the arteries (I actually think this is true) it still means that the low carb, high protien diets do something to heal that situation. I can't vouch for the other low carb, high protien diets as I've not researched them but I know that Dr. Atkins has a lot of research with real people to back up his claims. Over 20 thousand people have had success with it. And that is just the ones he can prove. Not people like me who never got the recommended tests.

I don't want to disagree with other posts but I also want to urge you not to ignore this problem, (it can be very dangerous as you know), without doing all your homework. I recommend you go to the Water Cure web site and read it all, making sure to read the forum messages. And also go to the Atkins website and read it all, including the messages. You might also want to visit some low fat high carb ones, but it sounds like you tried that route arleady. If you do this then at least you are making an educated decision. Below are the two websites. I've given the link to the research page of the Atkins site. From there you can click on Advice and inspiration for individual success stories. They no longer have a link to the low carb forum I'm a part of. I'm trying to find the link for it but all I can find are links to websites for weight loss. I may have to wait till they mail me again before I can post it. Sorry. It's filled with stories from people who's cholesterol has gone down. Also be aware that, as stated in his book, you will have a temporary rise in cholesterol when you first go on the diet. After that it shoots way down. If you stick to it strictly.
