I used plain tap water enemas every other day for a couple of years and never had a problem. When I stopped using them so frequently my normal bowel movements resumed, so there didn't seem to be any ill effect. Everyone obviously responds differently and the advice from the old doctor/patient routine "Hey doc, it hurts when I do this", "Well don't do that!" probably applies here.
