Sorry to hear about your "scary insomnia". I too have suffered mild to bad insomnia. Still do but its improved lots! Over the years have learned some "things" that seriously affect how I sleep..... may be of some help to you? I hope!
1) I LOVE coffee - coffee "hates" me - will keep me awake for many hours. Have had to eliminate coffee (caffein - even de-caf) almost completely from my diet.
2) Eatng chocolate - did´nt realize chocolate has caffein (like coffee and tea)
- now I try not to eat chocolate in the evenings.
3) Eating a big or heavy meal late in the evening keeps me awake half the night.
4) Not eating enough - will also keep me awake.
5) Its tooo warm or too cold in bed - no sleep :d A cool and good ventilated (lots of Oxygen!)room works wonders!
6) Vitamin B-Complex (especially B6)
7) Taking Magnesium-Cal. before bedtime has helped big time.
8) Check out the Ask Moreless Forum on CureZone - most of us are too acidic, because of our diets (coffee, chocolate and other acid-forming foods). The Moreless Drink has helped many CZer with their insomnia.
9) CZer who have done Liver Cleansing or gone on the Master-Cleanse Diet have reported on sleeping well - this has been my experience as well.

GOOD luck and sweet dreams!
