I would say that rape is not the only reason for his behaviour. It seems to me that he was abused emotionally quite a bit, and that's the pattern of behavior that he learned.
It's like learning a language - one will always speak in their parents' tongue, which means that he needs therapy. You can't change him, especially if he can't change himself. Usually people who have inadequate emotional support and who are emotionally abused by their parents get physically abused.
