Well, here's where I see a real difference between Bush and McCain. Bush is definitely a hard-core fundy who thinks he actually has conversations with God who tells him to go to war and not worry about destroying the environment because none of us will be here in another 50 years anyway...endtimes and all that. McCain on the other hand, I believe, only panders to the Christian Right for political expediency -- that's why he won't talk about his faith, because on a deep level he thinks it's all a bunch of crap anyway. But he desperately needs their blessing (no pun intended), so he'll go to the Baptist church and then crawl and beg forgiveness from Falwell and Robertson--remember when he trashed them as "agents of intolerance" back in 2000? Now he needs them... so McCain's Christianity is a sort of fair-weather faith. He'll be faithful when it serves his purposes.

Bush is a dangerous man because he's convinced he can justify any and all his actions based on his relationship with God. McCain is a dangerous man, not because of his religiosity or lack of it, but because of his warrior psyche. His whole purpose in life is to defend America against real and/or imaginary foes. War will feature prominently in a McCain presidency... you can bet on it. If that weren't scary enough, now we have Palin, who is Bush in drag, equally Christ-bitten and as dangerous as they come. Expect to see creationism in schools, Roe v. Wade overturned, drilling where ever they smell oil, further destruction of the environment, complete disregard for the Constitution, and obliteration of the line between church and state, etc.

The Christian base you questioned as possibly “brainwashed” are the fundamentalist Christian Right that Palin springs from. Remember the Taliban? they are the other side of the same coin. I think brainwashing is definitely in the mix along with a license to do and say whatever serves their interests -- hypocrisy is not an issue with these people because they are God’s chosen. Remember Ted Haggard? Perfect example.
