It does take a while for the meds to work. Usually when my husband or I switch meds (no matter what we take them for) the doctor wants us to come back in about a month to see how we're doing.
That said, there are herbal supplements that he can try to augment the meds. Most notably---one that has been discussed quite a bit lately in this forum---Milagro de la Selva tea. My husband and I have been drinking it and his blood Sugar dropped 20 points after a month's use. For more info:

Other herbs to consider: Gymnema Sylvestre (has no known side effects); Grapeseed Extract (can't be taken if you are taking cholesterol lowering drugs); Prickly Pear Cactus (this needs to be taken with 8 ozs of water 1/2 hour before eating); Bitter Melon (in some people there a side effect of loose stools); Fenugreek (same side effect as Bitter Melon); Indian Kino (aka Malabar Kino, Pitasara, Venga)--this one has no side effects but I can't seem to find it anywhere; Queen Crepe Myrtle (I don't know much about this one); Bilberry Leaves (this one has some side effects); Asian Ginseng (again, has some side effects); Cinnamon (lately some studies have shown that this doesn't help much but we still take it).
If you want to have him try taking some of these herbs, I suggest that you google each of them. Also, go to a website that lists drug interactions with other meds to see if they have bad interactions with any prescriiption meds.
BTW, the Milagro de la Selva tea doesn't have any side effects.
