Two weeks ago my husband was diagnosed with Diabetes II. It really did not surprise me, because he is in his 50's, about 48 lbs. overweight and also has been drinking coke with Whiskey almost everynight for the past 9 years. He this out when having a physical for a possible job. His blood Sugar was 300+
I know enough about high blood Sugar that he needs to concentrate now on eating more vegetable and lean protein, and whole grains, and limit simple carbs and sugars drastically ( and even the alcohol ) He also is taking two new oral medications the dr. gave him to help lower his blood sugar. I am very pleased to see that he has been taking this seriously enough to be walking 1-2 miles every day the past 2 weeks. Oh, by the way, I am at opposite to my husband, as I have been hypoglycemic ( low blood Sugar ) for 22 years now. I check with a monitor occassionally my sugars and they always range from 88-114 ( which is basically normal, yet I still can have bad low blood sugar symptoms, if I forget to eat or work out at the gym to hard. Tonight, when I checked my blood sugar, I checked my husbands and it was 367. I was astounded. I though for sure it would be lower, since he's been walking and taking the meds. Or is this normal. . . does it take a while for the body and meds to adjust? Or can the alcohol still stay in his body and liver? We have recently moved to a new town and yet to find a good doctor that is well experienced and knowledged in diabetes and nutrition.
I would greatly appreciate any feedback or advise. ( PS. does whiskey carry alot of sugar in it )?
