Hello,
I had a sudden hearing loss in one ear in the year 2001. I still have some of the bass tones, but I've lost a massive amount of the high tones. The other ear is fairly normal. Every so often, I get periods of time when my ear feels 'oppressive'. I start to panic, thinking that I'm going to go completely deaf. I take Betahistine hydrochloride when this happens - a drug for menieres disease. I think it helps. I also take Ginkgo Biloba every day. My doctors say that I haven't got menieres disease and they cannot explain the sensorineural hearing loss. I'm going through one of those times when my ear feels so bad. This is now my 10th day with it feeling so unstable, dulled out and irritating. If I go to my doctor, he'll just send me to the specialist and he will just tell me to take the drug. I've been here a few times and I don't want to go through it all again when nothing comes of it. One specialist doctor tells me that the problem is with the auditory nerve. One audiologist said the same, since my understanding of speech in that ear gets worse when the volume is increased. In my mind, I'm thinking that all my hair cells ar in-tact, and maybe the nerve will come back to life one day. Maybe, this recent ongoing 'attack' is really the nerve getting better, rather than worse. I used to know a surgeon and dentist who said that nerves feel weird before they improve. I think I may just be dreaming! I love music and I play several musical instruments. The thought of going any deafer than I am throws me into a terrible panic and I've got no-body to really turn to. People think I'm making a fuss about nothing becasuse I can hear what they are saying. Can anyone offer any kind of hope, suggestions, anything? Thank you.
