The IUD is the most widely used form of birth control around the world. Women, and even young girls, in other countries have little conrol over their bodies, their reproductive choices, and often have no way to refuse sexual partners. They are often powerless and the risk of rape is a constant threat. Many women don't have the income to pay for a monthly pill or condoms, or have a say in whether their partner will even wear one. Medical care can be very limited. IUDs at least offer them the chance to control when they have children without alerting anyone to the fact that they are using birth control or have been sexually active. They are affordable, require little to no follow up, and are highly effective and reliable in preventing unwanted pregnancies. So, it may be a foreign concept to you that teenagers need birth control, but it is a reality to for many of them.
