Hey, you did the right thing in staying home with your children. That is one of the least selfish things you can do - going out for a career is selfish, and that lawyer is a jerk to think otherwise. Being with your children is priceless, and giving them a great education and environment is important, too.
Sorry to hear of your health problems, I hope you figure out the problem and get back in to good health (and comfort).
