Maybe not shut down, Steve, just waiting quietly to be called upon.

If someone you care for says, "Let's go get ice creams!"

Or, touches your cheek and looks deeply in your eyes, when you are in a quandry.

Or, applauds the loudest when you finish a speech.

Or, the toughest person in your family suddenly gives you full and unconditional support.

Or, if you jump up on the curb, and the bus misses you by inches.

Or, if you get a fine promotion you absolutely didn't expect...with a good raise in pay, and benefits...and you love the work.

Employees said with conviction that their boss, who was on the way to pick up his brand-new adopted son, didn't touch the floor all morning.

I wondered, when I first began to recognize these purely physical feelings within, from outside myself, if others had been feeling them all along...that I was just a late-bloomer.

A fellow was filmed teaching a group of children how to be safe.

He seated himself in a chair facing them, and had a girl pretend that she was walking by his 'car'.

He called out to her, "Little girl, have you seen a brown puppy?"

As she came closer to speak to him, he grabbed her wrist.

Then he turned to the group, "See...that feeling in your stomach! That's your warning signal! If you feel anything like that, it means danger is near."

Oh, how I wish someone had told me that when I was a child. I knew that feeling well...but I didn't know what to do with it...which was to stand back, out of reach, or to run.

I thought I was just being silly. In fact, being a woman, and reading newspapers, I became terrified of being alone in the house in the night. I developed it into a whole clutch of procedures to feel comfortable.

Children of the 1960's learned to 'Duck and Cover', and many have nightmares about it to this day.

Surely those feelings still operate within. ...And the ones we remember best, the signals of love and comfort and accomplishment...and approval.

One of mine was a plate of cooked sliced cabbage, with butter. My grandma, who was poor, had remembered I said I liked that, a day or two before. I was flabbergasted that she remembered, and cared enough to give it to me. That electric moment was probably the closest we ever came to each other.

Maybe the experiment we need to perform is within.

When you mentioned that there is no 'out there', out there...my jaw dropped. I had not heard that before. That's huge!

Everything I perceive is actually coming from within.

No wonder that fellow said, "I am the center of the universe. Everything that happens, happens around me!"

You, too...and me. We all internalize everything we see.

A fellow who drove taxi decided to spend his waiting-for-a-customer time imagining a man with suitcases coming to his taxi and asking to be taken to the airport...and getting another customer for the ride back.

Imagine the taxi-driver's surprise when exactly that fare appeared...and he got another for the trip back to his station, or nearby.

And it happened again and again.

So, here's the experiment...

...What do you feel? What did you feel on a special occasion? What are your 'best' recollections? What memory is dearest to your heart? What did you feel then?

And, no, don't tell us here...the act of saying your best things aloud to strangers could 'block' your memory in some way.

I'm just saying some of my stuff, here, to jog your memories. I've kept the most important to myself.

Once you have read the idea, it will forever lie, at least, in the back of your mind...another possibility. A good thing to try.

Unless, of course, everyone already knows all this stuff...and I am just a late-bloomer.
